Filipinos are well known for being bilingual; they constantly adapt languages in any degree of complexity in a matter of a few years.
As a Filipino myself, I know only two; English and Filipino. That’s pretty much mandatory for every Filipino. Such is enough for a Filipino to become a global person who can reside in any part of the world and can still settle down understanding the people around him.
But aside from our innate ability to learn languages, Filipinos are also good in bending their own language to create a sensational masterpiece. Filipinos who are really good in their native language never fail to impress their fellow countrymen with Filipino words that would appear to be weaving magic whenever you read them. And whether they are aware of it, they use their language in a lot of ways that gives a positive effect on the person who use it and the people who listens.
Such is slightly the case, however, in a variety show called, Nuts Entertainment.
Nuts Entertainment features our beloved stars going through a series of funny challenges set by the hosts, showing a more humane side to what seems to be a perfect being with skins and faces that has money.
Aside from either humiliating or improving the star’s fame rate, let’s use this show to prove how Filipinos really use their language. They use our language to deliver irony and insults but still make people laugh.
Filipinos are vocal people; this is because our democratic government encourages us to do so. Whenever there’s something we don’t like, we immediately start a riot. But let’s scale it down a little. In the part of the show where they interview celebrities, they drop insults every now and then. But that’s part of the show. Without it there’s no laughter. However I find it amazing that they don’t seem to hurt anyone in the process. Americans may dominate the floor in standup comedies, but when it comes to subliminal insults, we’re no doubt better.
The show also encourages that they use our language in cooperative means.
In this show, celebrities are always grouped in to two for every challenge, and the only way to win is when they communicate what each of them is supposed to do. Other comedy shows are usually scripted to deliver the humor, in this show however, watching them work together in a certain dilemma is what makes it all the more hilarious. Because they are in groups, they have to set aside their differences and listen to each other to win.
Maybe they didn’t intend it, but they also use our language to boost relationships.
Since they spend time with each other in every challenge, they would no doubt know more about each other. When they interview a celebrity, they also boost the relationship not only among the actors and actresses themselves but also with the audience. In every interview, they prove that actors and actresses are still human and that they also have their fare shares of troubles.
Finally, in what I have observed, they use our language in a positive tone.
Sure, maybe they’re insulting someone right now, but if you look at it they have no malice hidden behind that remark. Their harmless teasing is only intended to make everyone laugh including the victim. This also show a sign of friendship and acceptance since teasing is only bearable if you know each other well enough to know that he or she is joking and that person has nothing against you. Even when the show tackles the topic of the current events, for example a storm hit and devastated the Philippines, they are able to even make a skit about it in a hilarious manner. It is only in the Philippines that I see people still laughing even if there is a disaster nearby, only proving that we really are jolly persons.
Comparing this show to other shows, I would say that this differs from them because this show is not scripted, and because this is not scripted they are more prone to bloopers, which would deliver a more original sense of humor. Unlike bubble gang that is more skits oriented, this show incorporates more of a real life agenda. Meaning that what happens to them is definitely possible in real life.
I believe that this show captures the social side of Filipinos.
If you have never watched this show nor heard of it, then I advise that you switch your television on this Saturday night. You’re definitely missing a lot. This lighthearted variety show makes anyone laugh, and I assure you that no matter how stonehearted you are, you will definitely laugh at this one.
